There’s Never Enough Time, But Time Will Tell
Life balance with prioritization, accountability, and action
Your time investment represents what’s most important to you.
So many people, including myself, repeatedly say we have absolutely no time to accomplish certain things when the truth is we invest our time in what’s most important to us. Whether it be our family, our friends, our health, our career, movies, TV shows, or our hobbies. Our time is our choice.
Do you choose to eat fast food instead of going to the gym? Do you spend countless hours a week binge-watching your favorite TV shows instead of planning your next career move? Do you love your hobbies more than you love playing with your kids? Do you call your friends a lot more than you call your parents? Time will tell — in a sense that if you were to be able to track your time for the past few years, you’d be able to see where most of your time goes. It also means that over time, any outcome — good or bad — can be a potential result of all your decisions compounded over those years.
There never is enough time in the day, or the week, or the month, or even the year to accomplish the things we’d like to. It’s nearly impossible to equally invest in all the things we care about, or at least all the things we claim we care about. To that, I say as long as you’re happy. As long as you live up to your choices and your beliefs. As long as you take ownership of your decisions.
I’d like to think I do a decent job of balancing most things in life. As long as you’re content with the journey, how long the journey might take you to accomplish certain things, and how that journey might look like. This means sacrifice. It could come in different forms such as loss of sleep, weight gain, not watching movies, not hanging out with friends, or losing family time. It’s a tough balance, but that’s life. Life is tough.
To those who say you have no time for certain things, you’ll need to remind yourself: You’ll never have the time; you’ll have to make the time.
If you’re truly happy with the things you’ve invested your time into, then you’ll be just fine. Chances are you know what your priorities are. If not, then take the time to reassess, prioritize, and take action. No more excuses of working too much. No more excuses of being too tired. No more excuses of it being too hard. No more excuses, period; just accountability. Be the change; no one will do it for you.
To those on the same boat as I am: Self-reflect. Go at your own pace. Be accountable. Embrace the journey. Make decisions you know deep down is the right decision for you. ‘YOLO’ (You Only Live Once) mentality should be aligned with your values, not just decisions that might make a good story. Show the people you love that you care about them and never lose sight of what’s really important to you.
